Ahmed Osman Iowa City IA – The Iowa City community is mourning a heartbreaking tragedy following a devastating accident during a school trip that resulted in the loss of two lives. The incident, which took place during the “School of the Wild” trip at Macbride Nature Recreation Area, has left students, staff, and families grieving deeply. The body of 10-year-old Ahmed Osman, a beloved fifth-grade student from Iowa City, was recovered from Lake Macbride on Wednesday, just one day after the body of a teacher involved in the trip was found.

A Youthful Life Cut Short

Ahmed Osman, a bright and curious fifth-grader at Bourlaug Elementary School, was described by friends and family as a joyful and caring young boy. His innocence and enthusiasm for learning made him a cherished member of his school community. Ahmed’s family and classmates are now faced with the unimaginable grief of losing a young life full of potential and promise.

The Tragedy Unfolds

The incident began during a school-organized outdoor adventure at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area. While details remain under investigation, the Iowa City Community School District confirmed that a tragic accident occurred during the trip, leading to the deaths of both Ahmed and a teacher from Bourlaug Elementary. The teacher, identified as Hannah Jorgensen, 24, of Tiffin, was also a fifth-grade teacher at the same school.

Hannah Jorgensen’s body was recovered after noon on Tuesday from the Coralville Reservoir, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. She was remembered by colleagues and students as a dedicated and compassionate educator who loved her students and was passionate about outdoor education and nature.

Community in Mourning

The Iowa City Community School District issued a heartfelt statement on Wednesday, expressing their grief and condolences:

*”The Iowa City Community School District is heartbroken to share an update regarding the tragic accident that occurred during a Borlaug Elementary fifth-grade School of the Wild field trip at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area on September 22, 2026.*

*Hannah Jorgensen, a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary, and Ahmed Osman, a fifth-grade student at Borlaug Elementary, lost their lives as a result of the accident.*

*Hannah and Ahmed were deeply valued members of our school district community, and their loss is being felt throughout Borlaug and across our district. Our hearts are with their families and loved ones, as well as Hannah’s colleagues and students, Ahmed’s classmates and friends, and everyone who knew and cared for them.*

*Counselors and additional support personnel will continue to be available at Borlaug Elementary in the days ahead. We know grief looks different for every person, and our focus will be on caring for our students and staff and giving them the time, space, and support they need.*

*We are grateful to the first responders and agencies who responded to this tragedy and worked tirelessly throughout the search and recovery efforts. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office continues to lead the investigation.*

*This is an extraordinarily painful time for the Borlaug community and our entire school district. We will continue to come together, care for one another, and keep Hannah, Ahmed, and their families at the center of our hearts in the difficult days ahead.”*
